Dubai's Green visa is a renewable five-year residence route without a sponsor for skilled workers, freelancers or self-employed people, and investors or business partners. The route depends on the applicant's work or business evidence. (UAE Government portal, verified 16 October 2026.)
Source: withlida.com, 16 October 2026, from GDRFA's skilled-worker residence, self-employment residence, investor/partner residence and investor/partner entry records. Each residence card states that the issuance fee increases by AED 100 annually when residence exceeds two years. These are published components, not a completed five-year price. The entry condition is not repeated on the residence card; that omission establishes no exemption.

What is Green residence in Dubai?
Green residence provides the renewable five-year, sponsor-free structure described by the UAE Government portal, as of October 2026. GDRFA, Dubai's General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, publishes the Dubai residence services used in this comparison.
For an employee, self-sponsorship and employment are different questions. The skilled-worker residence card still requires a work permit under a valid UAE work contract, as of October 2026. A freelancer's permit likewise concerns the work activity; residence concerns the permission to reside.
The freelance visa and permit guide covers the separate permit-setup question, including GoFreelance. This page compares the Green residence categories rather than pricing a particular freelance-licensing package.
Who qualifies under each Green residence category?
Each category has its own test, so the useful starting point is the record that matches the applicant's work or commercial activity.
Skilled workers: occupation, qualification and salary together
The GDRFA skilled-worker residence conditions, as of October 2026, require a UAE work permit under a valid UAE work contract, occupational classification at level 1, 2 or 3 under MoHRE's approved classification, at least a bachelor's degree or equivalent, and a monthly salary of at least AED 15,000 or the foreign-currency equivalent.
The salary is one condition alongside the others. A job title alone does not document an approved occupational classification. For an employed professional comparing routes, this category is the closest match to an evidence file built around a work permit, contract and qualification.
Freelancers and self-employed people: preserve the financial alternative
The GDRFA self-employment residence conditions, as of October 2026, require a MoHRE freelance work permit and at least a bachelor's degree, specialised diploma or equivalent. The financial condition is annual self-employment income of at least AED 360,000 for the two preceding years, or its foreign-currency equivalent, or proof of financial solvency throughout the stay.
The income wording concerns annual income, rather than a combined amount across those years. Solvency, evidence of the financial ability to support the stay, is the alternative financial limb. It does not replace the permit or qualification conditions. The card does not publish a fixed bank-balance amount for that alternative.
Investors and partners: a commercial-project route
The GDRFA investor/partner residence card, as of October 2026, concerns a commercial project. Its condition is competent-authority approval and the applicant's authorisation to practise the activity. It is the closest category match for a file built around business participation and a trade licence.
Property residence is covered separately in the Dubai Golden Visa property guide. A business-partner record and a property-ownership record answer different residence questions.
Which documents prove the conditions?
The cards separate their document lists from their conditions. Both parts matter: a short upload list does not remove the qualification, income or approval conditions elsewhere on that record.
As of October 2026, the skilled-worker residence Requirements list names a passport copy with at least six months' validity, a MoHRE permit, and an employment contract if the establishment is governmental, semi-governmental or in a free zone. The separate Conditions section still requires a valid work contract. The wording does not establish that a contract alone substitutes for the permit in a particular employment arrangement.
The self-employment residence Requirements list, as of October 2026, names a passport copy with at least six months' validity and a MoHRE self-employed permit. Its Conditions section adds the qualification and financial test. The public card does not give an exhaustive list of acceptable income or solvency documents, or a complete certificate-authentication procedure. GDRFA's confirmation of the accepted evidence therefore remains an open application question.
The investor/partner residence Requirements list, as of October 2026, names a personal photograph, a passport copy with at least six months' validity, a partnership agreement, memorandum of association or investment contract, and the trade licence. A memorandum of association is the company's constitutional document. Those business records sit alongside the card's competent-authority approval condition.
How do entry permission and residence issuance differ?
The investor/partner entry service permits a stay of 60 days from entry while the necessary residence processes are completed, according to GDRFA's entry card, as of October 2026. That is a different service from issuing the residence permit.
The same entry card states that the investor's or partner's paid share on incorporation or contribution must be at least AED 1 million, or the foreign-currency equivalent. It also states company legal-form conditions and continued adherence for maintaining and renewing Green residence. Its English legal-form names require confirmation against the actual company record with GDRFA and the relevant licensing authority.
The residence card does not repeat that paid-share amount. The omission does not establish an exemption. The two cards have different scopes; neither reading supplies an individual legal conclusion about a company or applicant.
The following separates the applicant's record questions from the submission steps published on GDRFA's residence service, verified October 2026:
Identify the service and stage
Match the category to its official residence card. For a newcomer or someone already in Dubai, the entry or in-country route remains a case-specific question for GDRFA or an Amer centre, the application-service centres listed by GDRFA.
Submit through a published channel
The digital steps are to log into GDRFA smart services with UAE Pass or a username, find the service, complete the application data and pay the applicable fee. The cards also list Amer and Customer Happiness Centre channels.
Track the residence record separately
An issued entry permission records the entry stage. The residence application and its issued permit are separate records to reconcile with the applicant's documents and invoice.
How much does a Dubai Green visa cost?
The residence cards publish fee components, rather than a single completed-application price. The comparison table keeps the schedules attached to the relevant category.
As verified in October 2026, the skilled-worker, self-employment and investor/partner residence cards each show AED 200 for the residence permit, the AED 100 annual-increase note for residence exceeding two years, and the separately listed Knowledge, Innovation, inside-country and delivery charges shown above. The duration note needs to remain alongside the base fee when reading a five-year application invoice.
The investor/partner entry card, as of October 2026, separately lists an AED 200 work visa fee plus 5% VAT. For an applicant inside the country, it lists additional AED 10 Knowledge, AED 10 Innovation and AED 500 inside-country charges. It expressly says the total may vary with the applicant's circumstances or other reasons.
These schedules are not combined into a complete total here. The actual fee assessment establishes which stage and charges apply. Any medical, Emirates ID, insurance or service-centre items on the application also need their own stated inclusions and prices; the residence base fee alone does not price them.
What would a skilled worker's document checklist look like?
A document comparison can identify an unanswered condition without deciding an application. Noor is an explicitly fictional applicant, created only to illustrate the skilled-worker residence card, as verified in October 2026.
In this example, Noor has a bachelor's degree, a work permit and a signed contract recording AED 15,000 monthly. Her occupational classification has not yet been documented in the example.
- Passport: a copy and its expiry date allow comparison with the card's minimum six-month validity condition.
- Work permission: the permit and signed contract connect the file to the card's work-permit and valid-contract conditions.
- Occupation: the approved classification level remains an evidence question. Noor's job title does not answer it on its own.
- Qualification: her degree is the document to compare with the qualification condition; GDRFA confirms the accepted form and any authentication required for her case.
- Salary: the fictional contract amount equals the published monthly threshold. That numerical match does not determine the other conditions or the authority's decision.
The result is a file with a clearly identified classification question and evidence formats still to confirm. It is neither an eligibility finding nor an approval forecast, and it produces no complete fee total.
What are the renewal conditions and grace periods?
Renewal remains subject to the original terms, according to Dubai.ae's Green residence overview, verified October 2026. The initial permit is therefore not evidence that a later renewal's conditions have already been established.
The GDRFA skilled-worker renewal card, as of October 2026, again lists the passport, MoHRE permit and applicable employment contract. Its conditions repeat the occupational classification, qualification and monthly-income test. For business partners, the entry record's continued-adherence wording also needs to stay visible when discussing renewal.
The skilled-worker, self-employment and investor/partner residence-issuance cards each state a 180-day grace period after residence expiry or cancellation, as of October 2026. This statement is confined to those named residence records; it does not describe an entry permission or a family member's permit.
Can Green residence holders sponsor family, and how does this affect the housing plan?
The UAE Government overview includes the ability to sponsor spouses and children, as of October 2026. That benefit is distinct from issuing each family member's residence permit; the dependent application has its own requirements to confirm with GDRFA.
The live family visa guide explains employee-family sponsorship. Its scope matters: that checklist is not presented here as a complete application list for a Green residence holder's family.
For the household, the useful planning distinction is between residence documents and the home itself. A residence category answers the permission-to-reside question. The Jumeirah Lake Towers housing guide addresses the separate comparison of homes, building records and daily journeys. Rent, household bills and the school commute remain their own parts of a relocation budget.

The official Green overview, as of October 2026, identifies the work, self-employment and business-partner categories compared here.
