A physical Silver or Gold nol card in Dubai costs AED 25: AED 6 issuance plus AED 19 stored credit, according to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) purchase service, verified 22 October 2026. Silver is the straightforward fit for regular-class travel. A website top-up needs activation before the extra money becomes usable.
Source: withlida.com, 22 October 2026, using RTA's card comparison, anonymous-card purchase service and Personal-card application service. Prices shown are the stated standard products; special designs and Personal Gold have separate fees.
Last verified: 22 October 2026. RTA rules, prices and channel capabilities below are as checked on that date. The service cards display an update date of 29 September 2026.
For the journey-fare comparison and its place in household spending, see the Dubai cost-of-living guide. This guide follows the card from purchase through registration, usable balance and pass management.
Which nol card types exist, and which fits a new resident?
Silver is the direct match for regular-class travel; Gold adds Metro and Tram Gold Class access. Both begin as anonymous cards, meaning they have not been registered to an identified owner. Registration changes the card's status and services, rather than changing Silver into Gold. These distinctions come from RTA's comparison and registration service, as of October 2026.
The Personal blue card is a named card linked to Emirates ID, the UAE identity document. Its standard adult category offers balance protection and pass access; a fare reduction depends on an eligible concession category. Simply living in Dubai or buying a blue card does not establish concession eligibility. RTA Personal-card service, October 2026.
RTA's comparison lists 5-year validity for Silver, Gold and Personal cards. The Red Ticket is a paper ticket with validity stated as 90 days or 10 trips and capacity for 10 journeys or 5 daily passes. It is limited to Bus, Metro and Tram, and the comparison describes use on one mode at a time. Its ticket cost does not buy an open-ended cash balance. RTA comparison and purchase conditions, October 2026.
RTA also lists a nol Travel packaged card at AED 100, including AED 19 credit. That packaged product is separate from a Travel Pass, the time-and-zone transport product loaded onto an eligible card. RTA comparison, October 2026.
Where can you buy a nol card, and what does the payment include?
Physical Silver and Gold cards are available at Metro station vending machines, station ticket offices and authorised sales agents. Red Tickets are listed at station vending machines and ticket offices. Personal cards use the online application route. RTA purchase service and Personal-card service, October 2026.
Source: withlida.com, 22 October 2026, using the RTA purchase, card comparison and Personal-card pages. The table does not extend physical-card starting credit to a freshly downloaded virtual card.
The purchase service lists cash and credit or debit card payment. The available payment choice remains channel-specific. Its website route sells Personal cards, rather than anonymous cards. Personal applications list credit or debit card payment; standard Personal Gold totals AED 80, including its Gold design component. The Personal People of Determination card is listed as free. RTA purchase and Personal-card fee schedule, October 2026.
Four amounts serve different purposes: the card price acquires the card; stored credit, also called the e-purse, funds later deductions; a journey charge pays for travel taken; a pass purchase buys a specified period and zone scope. An ordinary top-up increases credit. It does not select a pass.
When is nol registration needed, and who qualifies for concessions?
An anonymous Silver or Gold card works for ordinary travel, while registration enables longer-duration passes and balance protection. RTA charges AED 30 to register an existing anonymous card for an eligible citizen or resident. Registration itself does not confer a fare concession. RTA registration service, October 2026.
For an adult choosing a regular-class monthly pass, registering an existing Silver card is the relevant route. For someone applying under a concession category, the Personal-card application establishes that eligibility. RTA states maximum stored balances of AED 1,000 for anonymous cards and AED 5,000 for registered and Personal cards. Those are balance ceilings, not the amount permitted in every top-up transaction. RTA top-up service, October 2026.
The following labels preserve RTA's comparison-page wording. The application service supplies the current category checks.
Source: withlida.com, 22 October 2026, using RTA's concession-document comparison and Personal-card eligibility. The labels do not make every resident eligible for a concession.
RTA's Personal-card service states a 50% fare reduction for eligible students and seniors, with category and service restrictions. A standard adult Personal card has no fare reduction. Concession validity and renewal are separate from the card's normal validity; the active category in the application matters. RTA Personal-card service, October 2026.
Register the existing card
On RTA's website, log in with UAE Pass, the national digital identity, or an RTA account. Choose Manage nol Card, then Register Existing Silver/Gold nol Card, confirm the tag ID, the card's identifying number, and pay the registration fee.
Complete registration activation
For the website route, RTA says to wait 45 minutes to 4 hours after the registration SMS, then activate through nol Pay, S'hail NFC or Metro check-in and check-out. NFC, near-field communication, lets a supported phone read and update a physical card at close range.
Source: RTA registration steps, as of October 2026. This updates the card's registration status; a pending money top-up has its own completion step.
How do nol top-ups activate, and when is the balance usable?
A successful payment can leave money pending until a reader writes it to the card. RTA's channel-specific activation table separates immediate card updates from remote top-ups that take 45 minutes to 4 hours before activation. The final NFC tap is part of completing the transaction. RTA top-up service, October 2026.
Source: withlida.com, 22 October 2026, using RTA's top-up service steps and activation matrix. No universal wallet or card-payment method is inferred for unnamed machines or counters.
For a vending-machine top-up, RTA specifies keeping the card on the reader for 6 seconds. For supported virtual cards, nol Pay credits the top-up instantly. The phone models eligible for a virtual card are a separate question from whether an app can update a physical card. RTA top-up service, October 2026.
A bus validator cannot activate a pending remote top-up. A solar top-up machine at a bus stop is a different device. A resident whose first leg is a bus journey needs the additional balance activated through one of RTA's permitted channels before boarding. RTA top-up FAQ, October 2026.
The same service gives AED 7.50 as the general minimum balance for public transport. Its gate-activation FAQ lists AED 7.50, with AED 3.50 for the blue card. A pending top-up does not substitute for the existing balance needed to open the gate. RTA requires activation within 180 days of the online transaction and says amounts cannot activate on expired or blocked cards. RTA top-up conditions and FAQ, October 2026.
What happens after buying a card and topping up on the website?
In this hypothetical example, AED 45 paid leaves AED 39 stored after activation, assuming no travel or other spending. The difference is the published issuance fee, not missing credit. The purchase inputs come from RTA's purchase breakdown; the activation sequence comes from RTA's top-up service, both verified in October 2026.
Source: withlida.com, 22 October 2026. Calculation from RTA's AED 25 purchase components and an explicitly hypothetical AED 20 website top-up, with no spending or other deductions assumed.
The reconciliation is AED 25 + AED 20 = AED 45 paid, and AED 6 issuance + AED 39 stored = AED 45. The website receipt establishes payment; successful activation establishes that the extra credit has reached the card. RTA's official balance-check routes are nol Pay and the nol Card Balance option on its website. RTA top-up FAQ, October 2026.

Which travel passes can a nol card hold, and how are they managed?
Anonymous Silver and Gold cards support a 7-day pass; registered and Personal cards support 7-, 30-, 90- and 365-day passes. The Red Ticket supports the daily-pass product, with a maximum of 5 daily-pass reloads. Pass price, class and zone scope are separate from the card's purchase price. RTA fare notes and Travel Pass service, October 2026.
Passes are priced by duration, travel class and zone coverage. The selected prices below exclude card issuance and starting credit.
Source: withlida.com, 22 October 2026, from RTA's nol Products Prices table. The 30-day products require an eligible registered or Personal card; concession categories have their own schedule.
For a household choosing between home locations, the pass needs to cover the actual home-to-work or home-to-school zones. RTA's Travel Pass service describes S'hail's Travel Zones map filter and calls for checking the return journey too, because bus routes can cross different zones. A pass applies within Dubai on Metro, Tram and eligible buses, excluding intercity and seasonal buses; journeys outside its zone validity attract regular charges. RTA Travel Pass conditions, October 2026.
Purchase: RTA lists nol Pay, ticket vending machines and ticket offices for a new pass. With a physical card in nol Pay, the final NFC hold after payment activates it; the station machine or agent completes loading at purchase. Renewal: the website and Mahboub also offer renewal, with Metro-gate activation. RTA specifies a 45-minute to 4-hour interval for gate activation, within the pass's covered zones. RTA Travel Pass steps, October 2026.
Renewal retains the existing product and zones. A change of zones requires a new pass selection. This makes the commute's route a useful housing input: the Bur Dubai area guide relates its residential pockets to Metro access. RTA renewal conditions, October 2026.
Can you use a phone or bank card instead of a nol card?
A virtual nol card is supported only on specified devices; paying for a top-up with Apple Pay does not establish phone-wallet acceptance at a fare gate. RTA's current purchase service limits virtual-card management to nol Pay on compatible Samsung and Huawei phones and the wallet of Huawei Watch 3 and 3 Pro. The exact model matters. RTA current purchase capabilities, October 2026.
An app's availability in an app store, NFC management of a physical card and holding a virtual transit card on the device are separate capabilities. A physical-card holder can use the supported top-up flow without assuming that the same phone can replace the card for travel. RTA purchase and top-up services, October 2026.
RTA's 5 July 2026 announcement describes a phased move to account-based ticketing, where a customer account holds the travel-payment record. Its final phase includes bank-card and digital-wallet fare payments, with all phases scheduled for completion by the end of Q1 2027. That announcement describes a future programme; current use depends on the live service capability for the particular product and device. RTA upgrade announcement, read 22 October 2026.
For the rest of a resident's setup sequence, the moving-to-Dubai guide connects residence documents, schools and the home move.
Can two people use one nol card?
No. RTA's current terms say the card is for its owner only. Each passenger needs their own appropriate travel-payment product. RTA top-up terms, verified 22 October 2026.
Can I top up a nol card with AED 5?
RTA lists AED 5 as the minimum for its website, nol Pay, S'hail, Mahboub and specified other channels. Its listed minimums differ: RTA Dubai AED 30; Dubai Now and Metro vending machines AED 20; Metro ticket offices AED 50. A top-up minimum is separate from the minimum usable balance for travel. RTA top-up FAQ, verified 22 October 2026.
Why has my paid website top-up not appeared on my nol card?
RTA specifies a 45-minute to 4-hour wait and then activation through an approved channel. Bus validators cannot perform that activation. Check the receipt and the activation notification, then complete the supported NFC or physical-reader step. RTA top-up steps and FAQ, verified 22 October 2026.
How do I check my nol card balance?
RTA lists nol Pay or the nol Card Balance option on its website. When reconciling a recent remote top-up, distinguish its payment receipt from successful activation on the card. RTA top-up FAQ, verified 22 October 2026.
Confirm the current card category, device support and activation instructions with RTA's linked service pages before paying. Fees and channel capabilities can change.
