Car registration in Dubai costs AED 400 plus AED 20 Knowledge and Innovation, before plates and other applicable costs; light-vehicle renewal costs AED 350 plus AED 20. These are separate Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) registration and renewal charges, verified 22 October 2026. For a household move, the useful budget separates the authority fee, inspection, insurance and optional delivery.

How do you register a new car in Dubai?

A Dubai resident's selected registration checklist contains Emirates ID, an Electronic Customs Certificate and a Sale and Purchase Agreement, according to the RTA registration card, as of 22 October 2026. The customs certificate is the vehicle's electronic customs record. RTA waives the sale agreement when that certificate is already in the same person's name.

The card offers an authorised-showroom route as well as digital and service-centre channels. At an authorised showroom, the owner presents the original Emirates ID, arranges vehicle insurance and pays the registration fees. For a resident collecting a new car during a move, that route brings the vehicle paperwork together at the point of collection. The digital route suits an owner whose vehicle evidence is already available.

Residence outside Dubai follows a separate resident category and Dubai-link conditions on the same card, as of 22 October 2026. Its employment-evidence route lists an official company letter certified and signed by the Dubai branch. That category is assessed separately from the Dubai-resident checklist above.

  1. Select the registration branch

On RTA's service card, select Individual and Vehicle Registration. Under the resident evidence category, use Resident (in the Emirate of Dubai). The Possession Certificate option records an unregistered vehicle and is a different output.

  2. Identify the owner and vehicle

On the website, log in and choose Register New Vehicle under Vehicle Licensing Services. Submit the vehicle evidence and complete identity confirmation through UAE Pass, the UAE digital identity service.

  3. Complete applicable inspection and insurance

The vehicle's inspection status must match the applicable conditions, and insurance must be arranged for registration. Where a test is required, use the appointment instructions on RTA's inspection service.

  4. Choose plates and receive the certificate

Select the plate and collection or courier method, pay the displayed fees and retain the receipt. Receive the Vehicle Ownership Certificate and plates through the selected route.

These steps follow the RTA registration service, verified 22 October 2026. Its website service time is 1 working day; inspection preparation, insurance and delivery are separate parts of the household's schedule.

What changes for an imported or used vehicle?

An imported or previously owned car needs its own vehicle-history evidence and inspection pathway. The RTA registration card, as of 22 October 2026, says a used vehicle requires a Transfer Certificate within the UAE or a Possession Certificate from Dubai, together with insurance and electronic inspection. A possession certificate issued by another emirate cannot be used for Dubai registration.

For a personal import, RTA accepts a Customs Card issued in any UAE emirate when the vehicle is imported in the individual's name. That customs route does not establish that every model or specification is eligible. RTA's vehicle-specific registration and conformity conditions still apply. Shipping and customs clearance are separate budget inputs from the registration service.

For a car already owned by someone else, the relevant starting point is RTA's individual change-of-ownership service. As of 22 October 2026, its resident requirements include valid Emirates IDs for buyer and seller, electronic insurance, electronic technical inspection and electronic mortgage release where applicable. It also lists proof of Gulf-specification compliance where required by the vehicle's Customs Card status. The seller initiates the transaction, the parties sign the electronic sale agreement, and the buyer completes registration through the stated process.

For a resident without a Traffic File, RTA's customer licensing record, the same ownership-change card also lists copies of a valid passport, residence visa and Emirates ID, as of 22 October 2026. That transfer has its own fee schedule. The new-registration example below applies to the registration card identified in the opening table; it is not a combined transfer-and-registration bill.

When is vehicle inspection required?

Imported and previously owned cars require inspection, while the new-car exemption has specific ownership and dealer conditions. Under the RTA registration card, as of 22 October 2026, a new, zero-mileage vehicle bought by its first owner from an authorised dealer in the country is exempt for 3 years from the year of manufacture or registration, whichever comes first.

Renewal has an additional timing condition. The renewal card's FAQ, as of 22 October 2026, describes annual renewal without inspection for the first 3 years for a brand-new, previously unregistered authorised-dealership purchase with a valid Customs Certificate, provided renewal is completed one day before registration expires. Every ownership change requires inspection, including within those first 3 years. A recently manufactured used car therefore does not inherit the first owner's exemption.

For ordinary registration and renewal tests, RTA's vehicle-inspection card, verified 22 October 2026, requires an appointment through its website or RTA Dubai app, subject to the exceptions listed there. Its Technical Inspection Certificate is valid for 30 days. That validity makes inspection a near-application task rather than something to complete early in an extended move.

The same inspection card lists a standard light-vehicle test at AED 150 plus AED 20 Knowledge and Innovation, totalling AED 170. This is a separate service charge from registration or renewal. Mobile inspection, reinspection and other test types have separate selections.

How do insurance and registration dates interact?

Insurance must be valid when renewal is submitted. A policy whose cover starts after the existing registration and insurance expire cannot complete the renewal, according to the RTA renewal FAQ, as of 22 October 2026. The insurer updates the electronic insurance record; the inspection centre updates the inspection record where required.

For its ordinary renewal route, the same card states 12 months of registration validity followed by a 30-day renewal grace period, and insurance valid for at least 6 months including that grace period. These are the card's published conditions. The grace period is a renewal window, not a substitute for checking that registration and insurance are valid for the intended use of the car.

RTA permits renewal up to 150 days before expiry, but says early-renewed ownership validity is calculated from the application submission date. For a household moving home, that matters when placing car administration beside rent, deposits and utility setup: early renewal can change the next expiry date.

New-car registration has a separate duration provision. The registration card, as of 22 October 2026, allows eligible new-car registration to extend up to 3 years depending on insurance validity, and describes authorised-dealer new imported vehicles registered for 1, 2 or 3 years with insurance for the requested period. That provision does not turn the ordinary renewal example into a multi-year quotation.

How do you renew online, and what if the mulkiya has expired?

Online renewal suits an existing Dubai-registered car whose insurance and inspection records meet RTA's conditions. On the Renew Vehicle Ownership service, as of 22 October 2026, enter the vehicle details, select the car, let RTA verify insurance and inspection, then pay and receive the certificate. The card lists the completed website service as instant, after the prerequisites are satisfied.

The attachment heading “Service Requirements: None” does not remove those checks. RTA says vehicles that do not need technical inspection are renewed through online channels only. Its electronic certificate can arrive by SMS or email, with printing and optional delivery routes also listed.

For an expired certificate, the same card requires payment of the vehicle's pending fines. Its FAQ says fines on other vehicles under the same Traffic File need not be paid if they were issued less than 6 months ago. For households with multiple cars, RTA says to begin with the vehicle whose registration expires first, by renewing or removing it.

RTA also states that late fees depend on vehicle category and the length of the delay, and that the Traffic File is blocked if renewal is not completed within 2 months of expiry. The card says re-registration terms apply when ownership is expired, so the ordinary renewal subtotal below is not an expired-vehicle quotation. It does not publish a numeric late-fee tariff, so no flat monthly figure is added to this ledger. The live transaction determines the applicable route and balance. These conditions come from the renewal card, verified 22 October 2026.

What does renewal cost in a household ledger?

Ordinary light-vehicle renewal has an AED 370 service subtotal: AED 350 plus AED 20 Knowledge and Innovation. The comparable new-registration subtotal is AED 420: AED 400 plus AED 20, before a plate selection. Both amounts follow their respective RTA registration and renewal cards, as of 22 October 2026.

Source: withlida.com, 22 October 2026. Service and plate inputs: RTA registration. Renewal and its delivery choices: RTA renewal. Standard inspection: RTA inspection. Insurance remains the actual insurer-quoted amount.

For a renewal that requires one standard inspection, AED 370 + AED 170 = AED 540 covers those two RTA service totals only. Insurance, delivery, any plate service, fines and any repair or reinspection remain separate. For a renewal using standard certificate delivery, AED 370 + AED 20 = AED 390 is the service-and-delivery subtotal before inspection and the other applicable amounts. Neither calculation is an all-inclusive annual car cost.

How does car registration fit a move and housing budget?

Registration belongs beside the recurring transport costs of the address: parking, fuel and the actual commute. The moving-to-Dubai guide connects that ledger with residence, schools and home setup. At the property shortlist stage, parking provision and the route between home, school and work are useful inputs to the household's own comparison.

For a resident bringing a foreign driving licence, Dubai driving-licence conversion covers the separate driver process. For the journey itself, the Salik charges guide explains Dubai's road-toll system and commute calculations. Keeping those records together makes the transport part of a relocation budget easier to update without treating the vehicle-registration fee as the whole cost of having a car.

Frequently asked questions, verified 22 October 2026

How much does a mulkiya cost in Dubai?

For a household light vehicle, the RTA registration card lists AED 400 plus AED 20 Knowledge and Innovation before plates and other applicable amounts. The renewal card lists AED 350 plus AED 20. Both were verified 22 October 2026.

How long does RTA registration take?

The registration website route lists 1 working day; the renewal website route lists instant service, as of 22 October 2026. Those service times do not combine insurance preparation, an inspection appointment and physical delivery into one completion promise.

Is there a grace period for car registration renewal?

The RTA renewal card, as of 22 October 2026, states a 30-day renewal grace period after the ordinary 12-month registration. Insurance and registration validity still need to match the car's intended use.

How much is the fine for an expired mulkiya?

The selected renewal card, verified 22 October 2026, says late fees vary with vehicle category and the duration of the delay, without a numeric tariff. The applicable fines and late charges must therefore come from the live RTA transaction.
