A student visa in Dubai can be sponsored by a UAE-resident parent or the accredited university or college the student attends. As of 22 October 2026, Birmingham Dubai's outside-UAE normal route totals AED 7,068.10, including a conditionally refundable AED 3,000 deposit. UAE Government; University of Birmingham Dubai.

Who can sponsor a student in Dubai?
A UAE-resident parent or the accredited university or college the student attends can sponsor student residence. The UAE Government overview, as of October 2026, retains these specific conditions:
- Expatriate residents can sponsor male children up to age 25.
- Male students over 25 can remain on their parents' sponsorship with evidence of attending a higher educational institute.
- Female children can continue under parent sponsorship for study regardless of age, until married.
The overview requires a university or institute certificate specifying the duration of study, alongside the other general residence provisions. A certificate supports the application; an admission offer itself does not grant residence.
For a parent handling the family file, the family-visa guide covers the separate sponsor, relationship and housing evidence. The student-specific higher-education condition above matters when reading a general family checklist.
What if a parent already sponsors the student?
Birmingham accepts evidence of other visa sponsorship, so university sponsorship is not its only route for international students. Its visa overview, checked October 2026, also says part-time students need existing permission, such as parent or employment sponsorship.
At Birmingham, the Right to Study Check is the university's verification of immigration documents. Before study begins, after registration, its checklist requires a passport, Emirates ID and, for non-GCC nationals, residence permission. Documents must remain valid throughout study, as of October 2026.
For a family, this creates two calendars: the existing residence expiry and the university's enrolment checks. A new academic year does not by itself renew the parent's sponsorship.
What evidence does the university need?
Birmingham's sponsored route requires an accepted unconditional offer for a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate programme and completed online registration. These are prerequisites in its new-visa instructions, as of October 2026.
Its checklist includes passport, photograph, signed student undertaking and any further documents in the current form. Applicants under 19 need a parent or guardian's signed No Objection Certificate, a written statement of consent.
Online registration confirms personal and programme details and enables student services, including email. The university's application sequence then requires its email account, payment and a form completed by the student personally, as of October 2026.
The evidence has different jobs: academic records establish admission, registration establishes the student record, and immigration records establish residence. A parent's help with preparation does not replace the university's student-only submission requirement.
How much does Birmingham Dubai's student visa route cost?
Birmingham publishes four initial application totals, depending on applicant location and normal or express processing. These are university package prices, including the listed insurance and deposit, not a Dubai-wide government fee.
All amounts below are AED. “Subtotal” is withlida's calculation excluding the deposit; “initial cash total” includes it.
Source: withlida.com, 22 October 2026, recomputed from Birmingham's new-visa fee tables. Fees are subject to change.
For an outside-UAE normal application, the arithmetic is AED 2,187 + AED 850 + AED 1,031.10 = AED 4,068.10, then AED 4,068.10 + AED 3,000 = AED 7,068.10. The family needs the deposit available even though it is held separately from charges.
Birmingham holds the deposit until cancellation and completion of its sponsorship responsibilities. Its published refund conditions allow deductions for immigration-status fines, penalties or additional charges. Birmingham, October 2026.
The cancellation schedule has separate charges, including exit verification when leaving the UAE. These initial totals also exclude renewal, tuition, housing, flights and daily living costs.
What happens before and after arrival, and how long does it take?
Birmingham separates its application review from the later entry and residence estimates. Its January 2027 intake deadlines, verified October 2026, apply to new international students applying from outside the UAE:
Source: withlida.com, 22 October 2026, from Birmingham's new-visa page. These are institutional deadlines for the named intake.
Source: withlida.com, 22 October 2026, from Birmingham's processing estimates. Review time is excluded from the later estimates; additional checks can change processing.
For this university route, the published sequence is:
Entry and arrival
Applicants abroad receive an entry permit before travel, print it and submit the stamped arrival copy through the university's Arrival Intimation Form.
Medical and identity appointments
The university and AXS, its processing partner, arrange the medical appointment and fingerprint biometrics for Emirates ID registration.
Residence and campus records
The university sends residence permission and, if selected, insurance. It notifies the student when Emirates ID reaches the campus Student Hub and requires the Right to Study Check.
This sequence comes from Birmingham's instructions, October 2026. Birmingham says to wait for the entry permit before booking UAE flights. During its new-visa processing, students must not travel to or exit the UAE on another visa. The visa medical-test guide explains the separate health-check stage.
How is the university-sponsored visa renewed?
Birmingham's visa lasts 12 months and renews annually for continuing eligible study. Its renewal page, as of October 2026, says to start at least 30 days before expiry and requires the student to be in the UAE.
The renewal file includes registration for the new academic year, residence permission, a passport with at least 6 months' validity, a photograph and colour copies of both sides of Emirates ID.
Source: withlida.com, 22 October 2026, from Birmingham's renewal schedule. Each total adds the three listed components.
The university review can take 5 working days separately. Its normal renewal estimate is 4-6 weeks, or 3-4 weeks express, from application on AXS. Birmingham says students cannot exit the UAE or apply for another visa category during renewal processing. These are its institutional instructions, not a universal renewal timetable.
At programme completion, cancellation is a separate process. Birmingham's cancellation page, checked October 2026, says expiry does not automatically cancel the visa; the cancellation document states the applicable grace period.
Does a student residence visa allow work?
Studying permission and work permission are separate. The UAE Government's work-permit overview, updated 19 October 2026 and checked 22 October, describes MoHRE permits, including a student training and employment permit. MoHRE is the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation.
Sponsor terms also matter. The student undertaking linked by Birmingham, checked October 2026, contains a restriction on holding employment under its stated sponsorship. A proposed job or internship therefore needs confirmation against both the applicable permit route and current sponsor conditions. University admission or student residence alone does not establish permission to work.
How do accommodation and arrival costs fit around the visa?
Housing has its own agreement, deposit and payment dates. Birmingham's accommodation page, checked October 2026, describes student residences and commuting from home around its Dubai International Academic City campus, the university district. It identifies advance housing funds in addition to the monthly budget.
For a student living with a resident parent, the existing home and campus journey form the starting point. For a student residence, the useful comparison is the provider's written room terms, rent instalments, deposit, utilities, transport and cancellation terms. Neither a tenancy nor a room booking grants residence.
Insurance timing belongs in the arrival ledger too. Birmingham's medical-insurance page, checked October 2026, says its ADNIC cover begins after the student visa is obtained and recommends travel insurance for the first 1-2 months. It also permits independently arranged DHA-compliant cover, meaning cover meeting Dubai Health Authority requirements. The published fee ledger above retains its insurance line; any alternative needs a university-confirmed invoice.
The Dubai health-insurance guide explains coverage records. Birmingham's application FAQ, as of October 2026, places tuition in the offer letter and separates it from visa and living costs. That makes the initial university total one line in a household budget, alongside quoted tuition, accommodation, travel and daily spending.
For the wider household sequence, the moving-to-Dubai guide connects residence and home setup. Families considering a separate home can use the Dubai Silicon Oasis area guide for housing context, then compare the actual address-to-campus journey.
