Living in Dubai costs a household-specific amount. As of 15 October 2026, the partial scenarios below calculate AED 6,794.07 a month for one adult and AED 14,048.67 for two adults and one Grade 1 child, using published rent, official tariffs and stated assumptions. Both still need groceries, telecoms, insurance, cooling, housing fees, parking and personal spending.

What does living in Dubai cost?
The usable figure is the sum of your household's recurring commitments, consumption and personal spending. A single city average cannot establish the cost of a particular home, school and commute.
The partial scenarios in this guide price rent, specified electricity and water use, and one adult's public-transport commute. The family scenario also prices one school place. They leave the other household costs open for current bills or quotes. Neither subtotal is an all-in living cost or a comfortable-salary threshold.
For a renter travelling by public transport, annual rent and the actual fare-zone journey are a useful pair to compare. For a family, the named school, its attendance pattern and the school run belong beside the home cost. The rent reference and school example below are independent budget inputs, not a claim that they form a convenient daily route.
The moving-to-Dubai overview covers the relocation sequence, including residence, identity documents and home setup.
A complete worksheet needs an amount and period for groceries; home internet and each mobile line; medical-insurance premiums and expected out-of-pocket costs; cooling; housing fees; parking; and personal spending. Any employer-paid benefit needs its own written scope and dates. Separate cooling charges, including any fixed and usage components, need the building's actual provider terms. An unpriced line remains an addition to the subtotal.
How does annual rent become a monthly budget?
Annual rent divided by 12 gives a monthly provision, while the contract's instalment dates determine the cash requirement. These are different views of the same housing commitment.
Dubai Residential's The Gardens PDF, labelled Price List 2026 and checked on 15 October 2026, explicitly states annual rents. The monthly column below is calculated from those annual endpoints.
Source: withlida.com, 15 October 2026, using Dubai Residential's Price List 2026. Monthly provisions are calculated as annual rent ÷ 12, rounded to two decimal places. These are indicative portfolio figures, not a Dubai-wide rent sample.
The PDF says prices are indicative and can vary with the home's characteristics and location. The same landlord's live The Gardens webpage, observed on 15 October 2026, displays starting prices of AED 67,000, AED 83,000 and AED 135,000 for one-, two- and three-bedroom types respectively. The webpage's starting-price table does not label these amounts annual. They remain separate records and are not used in the calculations.
Neither source establishes which record supersedes the other. A dated written rent offer and signed contract settle the household's own commitment.
For an assumed annual rent of AED 74,000, the monthly provision is AED 6,166.67, calculated. If the contract instead requires four equal payments, each is AED 18,500, calculated as 74,000 ÷ 4. The monthly provision does not establish a monthly payment arrangement. The landlord's 2026 PDF lists one-, two-, four- and six-payment options; the selected contract controls.
The existing Dubai tenancy-contract guide covers lease procedure and contract records.
Which bills change with use?
DEWA electricity and water charges change with metered consumption, with monthly meter service charges added separately. The residential schedules use different units: electricity is measured in kilowatt-hours, or kWh; water in cubic metres, or m³.
The DEWA slab tariff, checked on 15 October 2026, applies progressively. Consumption within each band is charged at that band's rate.
Source: withlida.com, 15 October 2026, using DEWA's residential electricity and water schedules. The incremental water wording makes the published 27 m³ and 54 m³ boundaries explicit without counting a boundary twice.
For October 2026, DEWA publishes a fuel surcharge of AED 0.060/kWh for electricity and AED 1.100/m³ for water. The same page lists monthly electricity meter charges of AED 5, AED 6 or AED 35 for meter types 1, 2 or 3, and water meter charges of AED 5 or AED 7 for types 1 or 2. It states that 5% VAT applies to these tariffs. Meter types must be confirmed for the premises; bedroom count does not establish them.
Assumed consumption, calculated charges
The single-household illustration assumes 1,000 kWh and 10 m³ in one month. The family illustration assumes 2,500 kWh and 30 m³. Both assume type-1 electricity and water meters, charged at AED 5 each under DEWA's October 2026 schedule. These are chosen inputs, not typical-use estimates.
Source: withlida.com, 15 October 2026. Calculated from the stated assumed consumption, DEWA residential slabs, October 2026 fuel surcharge and type-1 meter charges. VAT is applied to the combined tariff amount; results are rounded to two decimal places.
These figures are a tariff calculation, not a complete DEWA account bill. Housing fees and any other applicable account lines remain additional. Cooling also needs its own billing arrangement and current quote; the examples do not establish that the assumed electricity includes the home's cooling.
What do education and transport add?
Transport depends on the traveller's fare class, zones and journey pattern; education depends on the named school, year group and fee year. A household subtotal is meaningful only when those choices are stated.
Public transport: specify the card and journey
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) uses nol, its public-transport payment card and ticket system, for the listed zone-based journeys. The RTA fare page, checked on 15 October 2026, publishes these standard fares.
Source: withlida.com, 15 October 2026, using RTA's nol fare table. RTA states that the Gold surcharge applies on Metro and Tram; the Gold row is not a universal bus-only price.
RTA allows transfers between modes within 30 minutes to combine them into a journey charged by total zones crossed. Its listed maximum journey duration is 180 minutes, with up to three transfers, as of October 2026. A return commute in the examples means separate outward and return journeys.
Each household example assumes one adult using a Silver card for 22 return-commute days, with each one-way journey crossing two adjacent zones. That is 44 journeys × AED 5 = AED 220, calculated. Card acquisition and any additional journeys are separate.
RTA also lists Silver 30-day passes at AED 140 for one zone, AED 230 for two zones and AED 350 for all zones, as of October 2026. A 30-day product is not a calendar-month allowance. Anonymous Silver and Gold cards are eligible only for the seven-day pass; registered Silver and Gold cards are eligible for seven-, 30-, 90- and 365-day products. Pass eligibility and coverage need confirmation for the chosen card and route. The scenarios use individual fares.
Education: one Grade 1 place for 2026/27
Bloom World Academy's fee schedule lists AED 60,000 annual tuition for a Grade 1 student joining in academic year 2026/27, checked on 15 October 2026. That is AED 5,000 per month, calculated as 60,000 ÷ 12, for budget provision.
The example assumes the published Grade 1 weekday pattern: lessons Monday to Thursday, 9am to 4pm, and Friday, 9am to noon, according to the school timetable, checked in October 2026. Registration, dismissal and optional enrichment have their own times. Household holiday cover remains separate.
The fee page includes the IB curriculum and Pathway subjects, a range of enrichment activities, access to a personal device and transport to sports fixtures. Sports-fixture transport does not establish inclusion of the daily home-to-school journey. Uniform, meals, daily school transport and any additional care need current written confirmation.
For 2026/27, the school also publishes a non-refundable, non-transferable and non-deductible AED 525 application fee and AED 4,000 registration payment credited against annual tuition. It sets term shares at 40%, 30% and 30%, due by 1 August, 1 December and 1 March respectively. On this tuition input, those are AED 24,000, AED 18,000 and AED 18,000, calculated. If the registration credit is applied to the first term, its remaining balance is AED 20,000, calculated as 24,000 − 4,000. The school must confirm the credit allocation and any midyear-entry payment schedule.
Partial sourced scenarios: the arithmetic together
The single scenario assumes one adult in a one-bedroom apartment. The family scenario assumes two adults and one Grade 1 child in a two-bedroom apartment. Only one adult's commute is priced in each; the family's other journeys and school run remain unpriced.
Source: withlida.com, 15 October 2026. Calculated using Dubai Residential's Price List 2026, DEWA's October 2026 schedule, RTA fares checked in October 2026 and Bloom's 2026/27 Grade 1 tuition. Subtotals use unrounded rent division and are rounded at the end.
How much cash is needed separately at move-in?
Move-in cash includes payments that have different economic effects: prepaid rent, refundable deposits, one-time fees and payments credited against later bills. Adding them all to monthly living expense would mix cash timing with cost.
DEWA's move-in service, checked on 15 October 2026, publishes a refundable AED 2,000 deposit for a flat and AED 4,000 for a villa. Its activation components are AED 125 for small meters or AED 300 for large meters, plus AED 10 registration, AED 10 knowledge and AED 10 innovation fees. Those lines total AED 155 or AED 330, calculated, respectively.
A flat with the small-meter charge therefore has a published-line upfront subtotal of AED 2,155, calculated as 2,000 + 125 + 10 + 10 + 10. The deposit is refundable cash held separately from usage expense. Confirm any tax or adjustment shown in the actual activation checkout; this subtotal does not infer activation-tax treatment from the consumption tariff.
Source: withlida.com, 15 October 2026. DEWA and Bloom amounts come from the linked primary schedules; private cash requirements remain contract- or quote-specific. This is a classification table, not a total relocation bill.
Ejari, the Dubai Land Department's tenancy-registration system, has its own channels and charges. The landlord's 2026 rent PDF states AED 214.50 for Ejari registration. That is its published charge, not a universal DLD fee, and is not added to these recurring scenarios. The existing Ejari registration guide explains the procedure and channel distinctions.
DEWA's applicable tenant route uses Ejari and sends account and deposit-payment details after registration, according to its move-in page as of October 2026. The household cash calendar can therefore show the contract payment dates, the utility payment request and school invoices individually, preserving each payment's purpose.
How much does it cost to live in Dubai?
As checked on 15 October 2026, this guide's calculated partial monthly scenarios are AED 6,794.07 for one adult and AED 14,048.67 for two adults and one Grade 1 child. They use the published records and assumptions above. Groceries, telecoms, insurance, cooling, housing fees, parking, personal spending and other stated household costs still need prices.
What are monthly expenses in Dubai for a single person with rent?
Start with the household's annual rent divided by 12, then add consumption bills, the chosen commute and personal spending. The one-adult example uses an indicative AED 74,000 annual rent from the landlord's 2026 PDF; its calculated partial subtotal is not a complete single-person budget.
What does one unit of electricity cost in Dubai?
DEWA's residential first slab is AED 0.230 per kWh for the first 2,000 kWh each month, with higher rates on subsequent bands. Its October 2026 electricity fuel surcharge is AED 0.060/kWh. Meter charges and the published 5% VAT treatment also enter the calculation.
What is an average water bill in Dubai?
The assumed examples do not establish an average. DEWA's residential water calculation starts at AED 7.700/m³ for the first 27 m³, adds the October 2026 surcharge of AED 1.100/m³, and includes the applicable meter charge and VAT. The household's actual consumption determines its calculation.
Checked by the publication's independent check, 15 October 2026.
