Existing Dubai residents who are not UAE nationals can renew an Emirates ID after expiry or when less than six months remain. ICP, the federal identity authority, lists Resident fees of AED 100 per residence year plus AED 100 for a smart application, as verified on 16 October 2026. Dubai residence renewal is handled by GDRFA, Dubai's residence authority. (ICP renewal service, GDRFA residence channels.)

When can an existing resident renew an Emirates ID?
A non-UAE national can apply after the card expires or when less than six months remain before expiry. The UAE-national window is different: ICP allows renewal when less than one year remains. These are the category-specific windows in the ICP service card, as of October 2026.
The UAE Government portal gives a general description of renewal as early as six months before expiry. For the resident application, ICP's more precise wording is less than six months remaining. Neither description establishes when a particular Dubai residence category can be renewed. (UAE Government Emirates ID overview, verified October 2026.)
For an existing resident, the useful starting point is the expiry date on the card alongside the residence record. An ID renewal window does not, by itself, settle residence eligibility or the status of an employment permit.
Is this card renewal, residence renewal, replacement or an update?
Card expiry, residence expiry, a lost card and changed personal details lead to different services. The distinction determines which application is being made.
- Card renewal: ICP's renewal service deals with an expired or eligible expiring Emirates ID. (ICP renewal, October 2026.)
- Residence renewal: GDRFA provides Dubai's residence-renewal channels. The identity-card application is not evidence that the residence application has been approved. (GDRFA, October 2026.)
- Lost or damaged card: ICP's replacement service issues a card with the original validity period. Replacement therefore does not extend that period. (ICP replacement service, October 2026.)
- Phone, email or address change: ICP's Data Update service covers these contact details through the personal account, with family-member changes through the sponsor's or head of family's account. A name or other core identity change needs ICP's applicable procedure. (ICP Data Update, October 2026.)
The government portal says personal-detail changes must be reported to ICP within one month of the change, as verified in October 2026. A future renewal date is therefore a separate matter from reporting changed details. (UAE Government.)
Which documents and biometrics apply to resident renewal?
ICP's Resident document list names a passport and personal photo. Its Resident terms require a recent photo that differs from the photograph on the current card, as of October 2026. The GCC-national proofs shown elsewhere on the same page belong to that separate category. (ICP service card.)
For biometrics, the physical capture of identifying features, ICP states that people who have completed 15 years must complete fingerprint and signature procedures through its service centres. The published wording does not establish a blanket exemption for adults whose fingerprints were captured previously. The application instructions establish the appointment or action required for the file. (ICP, October 2026.)
Medical fitness belongs with the applicable residence requirements. For example, GDRFA's family-member residence-renewal card lists a medical examination for those over 18, as of October 2026. That category-specific requirement is separate from the short ID document list and does not make a medical test a universal requirement for every child's ID renewal. (GDRFA family residence renewal.)
How does Dubai differ from other emirates?
ICP expressly excludes Dubai from the unified residence-and-identity application arrangement described in its Resident terms. The service card says that the unified form is used in all emirates except Dubai, as verified in October 2026. (ICP.)
Dubai residents still use ICP for the identity card. GDRFA lists its website, GDRFADUBAI and DUBAINOW apps, and Amer centres as residence-renewal channels. Amer centres are service centres supporting Dubai immigration applications. (GDRFA channel list, October 2026.)
The practical distinction is between the identity application and the residence application, even where a sponsor or service centre helps coordinate both. Each file has its own requirements and outcome. A receipt for the ID application does not establish continued permission to work; that question requires the relevant residence and employment authorities' assessment.
What are the card fees for a two-year resident renewal?
The published Resident ID components give an illustrative two-year subtotal of AED 300: two years at AED 100 per year, plus AED 100 for the smart application. These inputs come from the ICP Resident fee schedule, verified October 2026.
Source: withlida.com, 16 October 2026. Publication calculation from ICP's Resident annual card and smart application fees; two years is the example's assumed residence period.
This is a calculation from named fee components, rather than a checkout quote. Residence renewal, medical testing, delivery, typing or service-centre charges, other applicable charges and fines remain outside it. The selected residence category and the actual application determine the remaining bill; the ID card schedule alone does not price those items.
For a household planning a tenancy renewal or move at the same time, separating these costs keeps the paperwork budget distinct from rent and home setup. The moving-to-Dubai guide connects residence preparation with housing, schools and utilities.
What are the Emirates ID late fees and exemptions?
The UAE Government portal states that a renewal made after one month since expiry attracts an ID late fee of AED 20 per day, capped at AED 1,000, as verified in October 2026. This is the identity-card late fine. It does not describe a visa overstay allowance or set an overstay fine. (UAE Government.)
ICP also publishes a separate request for exemption from administrative ID delay fees, subject to approved exemption decisions and supporting evidence. Eligibility and approval depend on the case; a renewal application alone does not establish an exemption. (ICP exemption service, October 2026.)
An expired residence record therefore needs its own GDRFA follow-up, regardless of how the ID fine is calculated. The two expiry dates and any authority notices belong in the same household calendar, with each deadline labelled by the document it concerns.
How is the renewal submitted and followed up?
ICP provides the identity-renewal application through its website, UAEICP app and listed service centres. Its service card requires UAE Pass, the UAE's digital sign-in identity, for access to the online service, as of October 2026. (ICP renewal service.)
Match the service to the file
Select Identity Card Renewal and the Resident category. Coordinate the relevant Dubai residence application through the GDRFA channel handling the residence file.
Submit the required information
Check the passport details, upload the required photo and documents, and complete the requested payment. Keep the application reference and receipt with the residence-file records.
Complete requested actions
Follow any fingerprint, signature or document-correction instructions. ICP's service card says returned applications require the requested amendments and may be cancelled if requirements are not completed within the specified period.
Track the identity application
The government portal directs Emirates ID applicants to ICP for tracking. The dedicated ICP tracker accepts the application number, called PRAN, or the Emirates ID number for renewal and replacement applications.
Sources for these steps: ICP renewal card, GDRFA residence channels, UAE Government tracking signpost and ICP ID Card Status, verified October 2026.
The ICP status page also directs applicants to its smart-services account for request status and lists 600522222 for enquiries. Those details were verified on 16 October 2026.
ICP lists a five-day service-completion duration on the renewal card. That is a published service estimate, not a universal end-to-end schedule for residence processing, appointments and card delivery. The page does not label those five days as working days. (ICP, October 2026.)
Can an expatriate resident get urgent Emirates ID renewal?
The government portal restricts urgent renewal to UAE nationals and GCC nationals residing in the UAE. Other expatriate residents can use the urgent service only for replacement of an identity card, as verified in October 2026. (UAE Government urgent-service scope.)
The portal describes that urgent service as issuing the card within 24 hours and directs eligible applicants to ICP customer happiness centres. Its published scope does not provide an urgent expatriate-renewal option or establish a door-to-door delivery promise. (UAE Government, October 2026.)
If a bank, landlord or service provider needs an updated ID during renewal, acceptance of the pending application must be confirmed with that organisation for the particular transaction. The renewal receipt does not establish acceptance by every provider.

Can I follow up without the application number?
For renewal or replacement, ICP's ID Card Status page also accepts the Emirates ID number. Its enquiry number is 600522222. (ICP tracker, October 2026.)
