Dubai residence visa cancellation is normally sponsor-led. GDRFA Dubai, the emirate's residence authority, lists AED 100 for cancellation, AED 10 Knowledge and AED 10 Innovation, a subtotal of AED 120, with a stated 48-hour service time, as verified on 17 October 2026. Work-permit cancellation and dependent applications have their own prerequisites. GDRFA cancellation service; UAE Government.

For a household leaving a Dubai home or changing employment while staying, the useful calendar connects confirmed immigration dates with the housing handover. Detailed tenancy move-out and banking tasks belong in a separate departure checklist.
Who submits the cancellation in Dubai?
Normally, the sponsor submits a sponsored residence cancellation. The UAE Government's residence guidance gives that general rule; for a Dubai file, GDRFA Dubai's own service card supplies the local submission channels, as of October 2026. Its channels are the website or smart application and Amer service centres. UAE Government; GDRFA Dubai.
The federal guidance describes ICP, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, for its federal submission process. That description does not replace GDRFA's Dubai route.
Digital submission
GDRFA's October 2026 card describes login through UAE Pass, the government digital identity, or a username. The submitter selects the cancellation service, completes the application data and pays the applicable service fee.
Amer submission
The same card describes presenting an application that fulfils the conditions and document requirements to an Amer customer-service employee, then paying the applicable service fee. Amer is the assisted submission channel; the application still needs the authority's outcome.
Both routes above follow the GDRFA cancellation card, verified 17 October 2026. For an employee, HR's submission reference and the eventual cancellation record answer different questions: whether a request was lodged, and whether cancellation was completed.
What happens to the work permit first?
The employer first handles cancellation of the labour contract and labour card, and the work permit must also be cancelled. For a private-sector employee, GDRFA lists the MoHRE work-permit cancellation extract among the residence-cancellation documents, as of October 2026. A work permit authorises employment; the residence permit records immigration status. UAE Government residence sequence; GDRFA document list.
The separate UAE Government work-permit page, verified October 2026, describes a formal cancellation request, complete data and attachments, settlement of outstanding permit fines for late issuance or non-renewal, and company confirmation that the worker received all due entitlements. This is a separate process from the residence request.
The residence guidance also describes the employee's signature on the employment cancellation application and a signed letter confirming wages and end-of-service benefits already received. That wording concerns actual receipt. It does not describe an acknowledgement to sign in advance of payment. UAE Government, verified October 2026.

For a person changing employers, the old work-permit cancellation extract, the residence-cancellation confirmation and any new authorisation are separate pieces of evidence. The live employment-visa guide explains the application stages for the replacement employment route.
Which family applications come first?
The family sponsor cancels the residence visas of a spouse, children and other dependents before cancelling the sponsor's own residence. That is the order in the UAE Government residence guidance, as of October 2026.
For example, an employed parent leaving with a sponsored spouse and child has two sets of prerequisites for the parent's residence cancellation: the dependent residence cancellations, and the parent's applicable employment-permit cancellation record. The source establishes that both come before the parent's residence cancellation; it does not prescribe an order between those two preparatory streams.
A family-sponsored resident may also hold a work permit, a category expressly described in the UAE Government work-permit guidance, verified October 2026. Family sponsorship alone therefore does not establish that there is no employment record to address. The family sponsor and employer have distinct roles.
Where the household is changing sponsor while remaining in Dubai, any proposed alternative to cancelling dependent residence needs GDRFA confirmation for the actual file. The published cancellation order does not establish a hold or transfer arrangement. The family-visa guide covers the separate sponsorship application and housing evidence.
What documents and fees apply?
GDRFA's Dubai card lists the sponsor's passport, the sponsored person's passport and, for a private-sector employee, the MoHRE work-permit cancellation extract. Its published residence-cancellation fee lines add to AED 120, as of October 2026. GDRFA cancellation service.
Source: withlida.com, 17 October 2026. Inputs: GDRFA Dubai cancellation fee lines. Subtotal calculated by withlida.com.
For an employee whose application uses those listed lines, the worked subtotal is AED 120. It does not price a MoHRE cancellation, an Amer handling service, a free-zone process, any applicable fine or a replacement visa. The card does not establish those amounts here, and this subtotal cannot serve as an all-in quote for every visa category.

The document list above belongs to cancellation. Emirates ID, the UAE identity card, has separate card services and application records; the Emirates ID guide explains those distinctions. An ID application receipt is not evidence of residence-cancellation approval.
How long does cancellation take, and how is it checked?
GDRFA states 48 hours for this cancellation service, as verified in October 2026. Its digital channel is available 24/7, while Amer operates during centre opening hours. Those availability statements do not turn the published service time into a same-day outcome. GDRFA service card.
The card's time does not measure the combined duration of employment-permit cancellation, dependent applications, residence cancellation and any replacement status. Each has its own action and result.
GDRFA's Visa Status page links its request/file inquiry service, verified 17 October 2026. The useful evidence progresses from a submission reference to the authority's cancellation outcome and the corresponding file status. A payment receipt or submitted request establishes submission, not approval. Where a status result is unclear, GDRFA or Amer can confirm what has been completed and which record applies to the person.
What deadline follows cancellation or expiry?
GDRFA's cancellation service card states a 60-day grace period after cancellation or expiration, as read on 17 October 2026. That is the wording on this particular card. The UAE Government's broader residence guidance describes grace periods according to resident category. GDRFA cancellation card; UAE Government residence guidance.
For a personal departure or status-change calendar, the relevant deadline is the one GDRFA confirms for that person's category and cancellation or expiry record. The service card's general wording is not a universal UAE-wide deadline. A useful confirmation identifies the residence category, cancellation or expiry date, and the last permitted date for the actual file.
Cancellation and replacement status remain separate. GDRFA's Status Amendment service, verified October 2026, lists a new visa and cancellation of previous residence as conditions, with the cancelled permit and new entry permit among the documents. Cancelling the old residence does not itself issue the new visa or approve a status amendment.
The cancellation record establishes the immigration action recorded on the file. It does not establish settlement of personal debts or clearance of every matter relevant to departure. An exit outcome cannot be inferred from a cancellation submission alone.
