From the 2026-27 academic year, an eligible Dubai private school can receive a quality assurance visit with no more than 24 hours’ notice. But only a full visit creates a new overall rating; a shorter monitoring visit creates a concise report without changing the school’s overall rating, KHDA said on 3 June 2026.
The return has two tracks, not one
The change for 2026-27 is a differentiated visit system. KHDA says every eligible Dubai private school will receive either a full quality assurance visit or a shorter monitoring visit. The type is selected through a moderated review of school profiles, submissions, achievement data and self-evaluation information (KHDA, 3 June 2026).
A full visit uses the complete UAE School Inspection Framework and ends with a comprehensive report and overall rating. A school completing its third year of operation automatically receives this form as its first full inspection. A monitoring visit uses a smaller team and selected audit trails. It produces a shorter report, but no new overall rating.
“Visited in 2026-27” and “newly rated in 2026-27” are not interchangeable. For either visit, KHDA says the school gets no more than 24 hours’ notice.
A rating measures six areas, not family logistics
The overall rating is a structured judgement of school quality. It does not score the surrounding neighbourhood or a household’s daily routine.
KHDA says the resumed visits continue to use the 2015-2016 UAE School Inspection Framework. Its six standards cover achievement; personal and social development and innovation skills; teaching and assessment; curriculum; protection, care, guidance and support; and leadership and management. Its six bands are Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable, Weak and Very Weak (UAE School Inspection Framework, reconfirmed for 2026-27 by KHDA).
The overall judgement is comprehensive, not a simple average. Read the findings by phase and subject, and record the report year. Routine full inspections were paused in 2024-25 and 2025-26, apart from schools reaching their third year, while targeted monitoring continued (KHDA, June 2024; KHDA, May 2025). A displayed rating can be valid evidence from an earlier cycle.
What each source tells you, and what to verify
No single field settles the choice. As of 11 September 2026, the KHDA school directory brings profiles, curricula, locations, grade ranges, reports and fee documents together.
Build a shortlist that can survive a weekday
A repeatable shortlist starts with the child and ends with direct confirmation from the school.
Set the non-negotiables
List the required curriculum, grade, learning support, language pathway and cost range. Dubai private schools span 17 curricula, according to KHDA’s 22 May 2026 update. Also check the 2026-27 school starting-age rules.
Open the official profile
Record the campus location, curriculum, grades served, latest rating and report date. If the school mentions a newer monitoring visit, remember that it did not create a new overall rating.
Read below the overall band
Compare the relevant phase, subjects, teaching, assessment, wellbeing, inclusion and support. The same overall band can sit above different detailed findings.
Build the current cost line
Open the grade-specific School Fees Fact Sheet. KHDA confirmed no private-school fee increase for 2026-27 on 22 May 2026, but the sheet still separates tuition and mandatory charges from optional or third-party items. Each sheet is valid for one academic year (KHDA fee-sheet FAQ, verified 11 September 2026).
Confirm the live details
Ask the school about admissions, the fee sheet, transport, subject availability, support and after-school timing. KHDA’s parent guide, last updated in September 2021, also points families to transport, assessment, school structure and communication (KHDA choosing-a-school guide).
Keep the neighbourhood decision separate
A school rating cannot rank neighbourhoods for a family. Map home, school and work together. Test the route during drop-off and collection, check the bus stops, and include activity days.
KHDA materials describe education quality and school information. The family supplies the daily-life inputs: commute tolerance, work location, siblings’ routines, budget and housing needs. The practical match sits where those facts meet, not in the rating alone.
Will every 2026-27 KHDA visit produce a new school rating?
No. A full visit produces a report and overall rating. A shorter monitoring visit produces a concise report but no new overall rating (KHDA, 3 June 2026).
What is the lowest KHDA school rating?
Very Weak is the lowest of the six categories in the UAE School Inspection Framework (official framework).
When will a school know its KHDA visit date?
KHDA says schools receive no more than 24 hours’ notice for either type of quality assurance visit in 2026-27. Its June announcement did not publish a school-by-school visit calendar.
